Camping as a family: an escape

PRINT

Camping, a serious passion for some and an occasional outing for others, is ever more popular among families. Each year, adults and little ones alike go camping to replenish their spirits, take in the fresh air and enjoy the calm. To help you get started and make your preparations easier, we've assembled some information and a checklist. After all, the main goal of camping is relaxation …

Comfort and convenience

Camping offers an array of accommodation types. The classics, such as tent, tent trailer, trailer or motorhome, are always in vogue. First-time campers, however, might be more comfortable going for a turn-key solution. For example:

  • The yurt, a round canvas shelter with a wood floor, generally has lighting and plenty of windows, and comes fully furnished.
  • The rustic cabin usually includes basic furnishings, electricity, running water and small appliances.
  • The Huttopia tent – which offers a wood platform, walls, a canvas roof and mosquito screens – is furnished, fully equipped and heated.

Yurts and rustic cabins are available in certain provincial parks, while Huttopia tents are found exclusively in about half of the 22 Quebec national parks.

Where to go?

Campgrounds are plentiful in all regions of Canada. To simplify your search, we've made a list of handy online resources.

Some campgrounds are especially worth the trip, in particular those found in the 19 national parks of Canada. Located in every province, these parks offer well laid-out campgrounds and breathtaking scenery. You can pursue a wide range of activities, such as recreation, nature interpretation and sports, especially canoeing and hiking. At each park's visitor's centre, you'll find maps of canoe routes and hiking trails that include length, time required and difficulty level.

What to take

Packing for a vacation is no small challenge. You need to be methodical and organized, since nothing is more annoying than forgetting something important at home. To make the job easier, we've drawn up a categorized checklist for you.

You and your family are now ready to discover nature and the great outdoors. On your marshmallows, get set, go!
